Neck Pain When Working

If your job has you spending hours in front of a computer every day, then you may be dealing with back pain and neck pain. Visiting our chiropractor in Oxnard at Chiropractic Wellness Center is a great way to find relief from this type of pain, and maintaining good posture can help you prevent this pain altogether. You can improve your posture to reduce your risk of back and neck pain with the following tips.

1. Place your monitor at eye-level.

If your monitor is too low or too high, you will have to lift your head throughout the day to see everything on your screen. This type of repetitive movement can cause neck pain, as well as eye strain. Keeping your monitor at eye-level allows you to keep your back and neck straight while sitting at your desk.

2. Use the right type of office chair.

Your chair—and how you sit in it—can also contribute to back pain and neck pain. Start by choosing the right type of office chair that will keep you comfortable while allowing you to maintain proper posture. Your chair should have a full back along with armrests and head support. You can also consider a less conventional but more ergonomic option, like a kneeling chair or saddle chair.

3. Keep key objects within reach.

Reaching too far to grab items is another major contributing factor to back and neck pain in office settings. Keep any items you use regularly—such as a phone, notepad, or calculator—within reach so you won’t have to stretch too much to get them.

4. Use a standing desk.

Even with proper posture and office ergonomics, you may still suffer from back and neck pain when you spend all day sitting in front of a computer. Using a standing desk for part of your day allows you to spend less time sitting.

5. Get up and move around.

Whether sitting or standing, you don’t want your body to be stuck in one position for an extended period. Take short breaks throughout the day so you can get up and move around. This can also help you prevent mental fatigue that can occur throughout the day.
